To fully understand Ron Cihuatán’s story, let us take you back to the Cihuatán, a Mayan city in ancient times. Here, Cihuatán was awarded with riches and fertility by a goddess. Today, her spirit is still said to take the shape of the Guzapa Mountain, watching over and guarding the sugarcane fields. Now you know a little about the local culture and legends that provided the backdrop for the first rum distillery in El Salvador. This rum is produced at the Licorera Cihuatán craft distillery on a 100-year-old sugar cane mill. Established in 2004, the distillery aged their rum in bourbon barrels made of American oak. Each of their rums is named after a different Mayan spirit or god, and the blend itself has a direct connection to spirituality ― each aroma is associated with a process in the Sahumerio ritual, which involves offering treats to the Mayan goddess Chantico through burning them, in return for her blessing the home with protection, love, friendship and unity. This rich and complex rum is numbered by hand.
